This research project was intended to explore the effect of using improvised instructional resources with collaborative learning approach for improving memory retention and self motivation for science and technology students in some selected secondary schools of Katsina state. Sixty students were purposively sampled from the twelve quality assurances directorates in the state to represent the overall research target. They were randomly divided into two; equally for the control and experimental groups. The study employs Quasi experimental design with control and experimental groups. It further uses memory retention test and self motivation questionnaire as research tools. The instruments were validated in the areas of construct, face and content by some educational technology specialist in Isa Kaita College of education Dutsinma. While Cronbach alpha (α) reliability coefficients of 0.88 and 0.78 were observed for the two respective instruments. Digital portfolio was adopted as the eLearning platform, two weeks intervention was implemented after which the respondents cognitive and affective degrees were taken and analysed by independent sample t-test using Spss software version 23 and the results indicated that the implementation of improvised instructional resources in a social constructivist’s learning approach moderately improves memory retention among technology and science education students and that self-motivation among science and technology education students moderately improve when learning with improvised instructional resources. Based on the results it was recommended that in order to exploit more on the benefits of improvised instructional resources in teaching science and technology subjects, instructors should put them into a well-structured collaborative learning activity among others.
