Abstract

This study investigated the influence of motivation on senior secondary school students’ academic achievement in English language and mathematics in Nasarawa State. Two objective were formulated with two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study with a population of 21,875 students and a sample size of 400 students. Multistage sampling technique was used for this study and two instruments, which includes Students’ motivation Questionnaire and Mock Profoma were used to collect data for the study. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and simple percentages for descriptive data while chi-square was used to test research hypotheses. Findings from the study the study showed that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation has a significant influence on students’ academic achievement. It is therefore recommended that learners be provided with the necessary motivation required for them to realize their potentials and learn better to attain high academic achievement in their tests and examinations.
