Metal-based drugs are important classes of new drugs in current medicinal chemistry with some different therapeutic profiles compared to organic compounds. This review considers these drugs used in oncology, antimicrobial therapy, and neurodegenerative disease focusing on the cytostatic and antimicrobial effects, the action mechanisms, and problems related to chemotherapy. Information about toxicity, resistance and stability issues is provided together with ideas on how to manage specific difficulties. The review further taps into recent studies and points future of drug design and advanced nanotechnology-based drug delivery techniques.
