EFFECTS OF NON-FINANCIAL MOTIVATION ON PERFORMANCE OF STAFF IN IMO STATE MINISTRY OF HEALTH

This study examined effects of non-financial motivation on performance of staff in Imo State Ministry of Health). Two research objectives, two research questions and two research hypotheses guided the study. The work is anchored on motivation and non-financial motivation. Survey research design was employed. The population of the study is made up of the entire 755 permanent staff of Imo State Ministry of Health. Taro Yamane sampling formular was used and a sample size of 262 was gotten. Out of 262 copies of the questionnaire distributed, only 238 copies were returned and used. The data were therefore analyzed using simple percentage and the hypotheses were tested using chi-square. It was discovered that staff training/development, conducive work environment, employee recognition and teamwork (as non-financial motivational indices) have positive and significant impact on employee performance. The study concludes that the achievement of employee performance in public organization (like Imo State Ministry of Health) depends on the extent of non-financial incentives. The study recommends for improved work environment, regular staff training/development, employee recognition/ commendation and effective use of teamwork in Imo State Ministry of Health so as to achieve high level of performance of workers.
