A contrastive approach enables one to examine the differences that exist between languages and the obvious challenges to the leaner of a target language. It is then that possible right approaches to overcoming possible challenges would be employed. This paper delves into a contrastive analysis of tiv and French languages with particular reference to consonantal features of both languages. The study shows that tiv language has more phonemic consonants than French language. There are some similarities and differences which appear their features. The major differences are those consonants that appear in French language but did not appear in tiv language. These are (post alveolar /ʒ/ and approximant, palatal /ɥ/). Therefore a study of this nature charts the way forward into providing remedial measures to tiv learners of French as target language
