Abstract

This study focused on gender inequality and women participation in politics of Nigeria using Ohaji/Egbema LGA in Imo State as the focal point. The study was informed following the inability of the Nigerian government (at all levels) to implement the 35% UN affirmative action for women in elective and selective positions. Four (4) research questions, four research objective and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The researcher adopted survey research design. Questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection and the data were analyzed using simple percentage and chi-square. Based on the findings as stated in the preceding chapter, women has many role to play when politically and economically empowered. It was recommended that men should be educated to change their attitude or orientation towards women empowerment and women's involvement in public life through public life through public enlightenment programmes. Also, change women's inferior assessment of themselves, low self esteem and lack of confidence through public enlightenment programme.
