Abstract

This study focused on motivation and performance of workers in government owned enterprises. The work was carried out to determine the major strategies for employee motivation in Nigeria organizations, and the work used Imo Transport Company as the focal point. Survey research design was adopted. The population of this study is made up of the entire 300 staff of Imo transport company (ITC) LTD, from where 171 staff were sampled. Questionnaire was used to collect data. Both content validity and test retest reliability methods were used. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and Pearson product moment correlation through SPSS version 21.0. It was discovered that job security enhances performance in public enterprises; and salary increase enhances performance in public enterprises. The work concludes that staff of government enterprises needs motivation in all ramification so as to enhance performance and achieve the organizational objectives. It was recommended that the promotion of staff should come as at when due so as to motivate them to perform their functions very effectively. Furthermore, there should be job security for employees in the organization; hence the need for the government to confirm appointment of staff.
