RISK FACTORS, CONSEQUENCES AND COUNSELLING STRATEGIES IN CURBING HUMAN TRAFFIKING IN ANAMBRA STATE

Human trafficking is one of the third criminal industries in the world. It has adverse consequences on the victims and society. The study investigated the risk factors, consequences and counselling strategies in curbing human trafficking in Anambra state using descriptive design. A sample of 240 counsellors were used for the study. The whole population served as sample since population is small. The instrument for data gathering was tagged ‘’Risk Factors, Consequences and Counselling Strategies in Curbing Human Trafficking Questionnaire’’ (R.F.C.C.S.C.H.T.Q.). The reliability of the instrument was determined using test retest method and 0.79 was found. While administration of the instrument was done on face to face administration. Weighted mean scores were used to answer the three research questions. The major findings are; histories of abuse, runaway amongst others are the risk factors. Educational de privation, sexual exploitation amongst others are the consequences of human trafficking while counselling strategies are creation of awareness of human trafficking and use of cognitive behaviour therapy among others are used by counsellors in curbing and preventing human trafficking. Based on the findings the following recommendations were made among which are creation of Awareness and Posting of guidance counsellors to schools to prevent human trafficking and counselling the victims to readjust and live a meaningful life.
