HISTORICISING THE LONG-DISTANCE TRADE AND THE ROLE OF MAI GIDA/BAALE IN THE PRE-COLONIAL ECONOMY OF ILORIN IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY

Traditional markets in Nigeria attract often physical development which leads to the growth of the city with its attendant management challenges. Ilorin, is a community in Nigeria, where its geographical location, climate, vegetation and topography have been an advantage for its economic growth. The peaceful co existence amongst its diverse cultural population and its unlimited potentials for industrial growth is an added advantage. The evolution of Ilorin economic opportunities is appraised from the historical perspectives. This study appraises the management approaches of some traditional markets in Ilorin, north central, Nigeria, with the view of identifying aspect of development associated with the markets. Ilorin metropolis is made up of three Local Government Areas, two (2) Local Government areas where traditional markets are highly predominant were randomly selected. Systematic and accidental sampling methods were used to sample traders and buyers in the markets. Qualitative and quantitative data were used for the study and they were sourced from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were sourced through the use of questionnaire survey and key informant interview method on the key actors in the markets such as the traders, buyers and local government areas. The information collected from the questionnaire survey was analyzed using descriptive statistical method. The study will provide for economic, social and political understanding of the area and it will serve as an exploit of its potentials.
