Abstract

Agriculture remains a key sector in Nigeria’s economy, yet it faces significant challenges, including erratic rainfall, water scarcity, and unreliable energy supplies. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered smart irrigation systems with solar energy offers a sustainable solution to these challenges by optimizing water usage, reducing dependence on non-renewable energy, and improving overall agricultural productivity. This study explores the design, implementation, and performance of an AI-powered smart irrigation system integrated with solar energy in Nigeria. The system leverages AI algorithms to monitor soil moisture levels, weather conditions, and crop needs, enabling precise irrigation scheduling that conserves water while enhancing crop yield. Solar energy is utilized to power the system, ensuring its operation in off-grid rural areas and reducing energy costs. The research evaluates the effectiveness of the system in optimizing water use, improving crop productivity, and its economic viability for smallholder farmers. It also examines the barriers to adopting AI and solar technology in agriculture, including financial, technical, and infrastructural constraints. Findings indicate significant improvements in water conservation, energy efficiency, and crop yield, making this approach a promising pathway for sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria. The study concludes with recommendations for policy makers, agricultural stakeholders, and technology providers on scaling up the use of AI-powered, solar-integrated irrigation systems to boost food security and enhance the resilience of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
