STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND EFFECTIVENESS OF MANUFACTURING COMPANIES IN RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA

This research has examined strategic human resource management and effectiveness of manufacturing companies in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. Primary data via questionnaire was used in soliciting a response from the respondents. The researcher used mean statistic to analyse data collected. Empirical results revealed that employee compensation has a positive and significant relationship with effectiveness of organisation, manpower development has a positive and significant effect on effectiveness, and performance appraisal has a positive effect on effectiveness of the organisation. Based on the results the study recommended that HR managers should focus on quantifiable criteria, give weight to an individual as well as team, encourage employee participation, and create open communication, all of which would lead to greater productivity thus reflecting on profit; and Adequate compensation is imperative in getting the best from employees. Thus, management should strive in ensuring that their basic pay reflects the government minimum wage policy and cost of living. This is believed to be the best retention strategy.
